BEVERLY HILLS - With 903 potential ballots still left to be counted, both outgoing Mayor Barry Brucker, and Willie Brien are guaranteed seats on this year’s council. The battle for the third open seat is between current city council member Linda Briskman, and John Mirisch.
Brucker and Brien’s wins do not come as any surprise. Brucker has been well respected in the community and most believe he has done an excellent job as mayor this past year. To date, Brucker has received 2566 votes.
Willie Brien has garnered 2476 votes to date, and as a former school board member, he is also well respected in the community. He was also seen as the man to replace outgoing city council member Frank Fenton, who did not seek to renew his seat this year due to ill health. However, FTA Events, the company run by Fenton’s wife, Judy Fenton, ran Brien’s campaign.
The battle is now between Linda Briskman, who would become the city’s next mayor were she to retain her seat, and John Mirisch, the man whose ballot was the cause of much controversy over the past few days, and which BHCNP covered
here.
Currently Mirisch leads Briskman, with 1979 votes, compared with Briskman’s 1860 votes. However, Briskman received more vote-by-mail ballots than Mirisch, while Mirisch’s ballots at the polls were higher yesterday. Given that the ballots remaining to be counted include provisional, vote-by-mail and poll ballots, neither candidate can tout victory just yet.
Should Mirisch prevail, the next mayor of the city will be Nancy Krasne.
An update on the ballots will be posted on Friday March 6. The city clerk has 28 days to verify the election results.
In other election news, Measure P that would have seen a rise in business taxes in the city was roundly defeated, and Eliot Finkel will retain his seat as City Treasurer – as he ran for the position unopposed.
Updated results of the election can be found on the city’s Web site at www.beverlyhills.org
